 Section Grade:

Responses contain underdeveloped weak or unclear sentences, and weak transitions OR Responses  lack an overall organizational structure and establish no clear links between sentences
Responses are well organized with well-developed sentences. The paper might have somewhat weak transitions and/or it might need additional development to be complete
Responses are organized, with well-developed sentences with smooth transitions. 
Responses have a clearly identifiable topical sentence, and is well developed and complete
 

Use of Sources

Responses demonstrate the insufficient use of source material Responses tend  to demonstrate summary of the sources rather than an interpretation of them.  Paragraph might feature improper citations
Responses demonstrate sufficient use of assigned source material Essay could contextualize the sources more effectively.  Responses feature citations whenever appropriate, but citations may be improperly formatted.

Section Grade:

Responses show some understanding of general ideas, but contain many factual errors or misinterpretation of meaning.  Responses do not address large sections of the question.

 

Responses provide factually correct evidence which supports topical sentence.  Responses might contain some factual errors.  Responses address most of the elements of the question.
Responses provide ample, well chosen, and factually correct evidence that supports topical sentence and offers original analysis.  Responses address all aspects of the question.
 

Presentation and General Format

 Section Grade:

Responses may have numerous typographical and/or grammatical mistakes
Responses are organized and well presented, has several typographical and/or grammatical mistakes.
Responses feature well developed presentation, and are clearly organized, and follow assignment guidelines.  Responses have few or no grammatical/ typographical mistakes
